You can shop for those you love while helping those in need. Here are a few suggestions:
• igive.com: An Internet shopping mall with more than 800 online merchants. Pick a cause, then shop; a percentage of your purchase goes to the charity you chose. • Goodsearch.com: A search engine that donates 50 percent of its advertising revenue to the charities and schools designated by its users.
• Heifer International Project, heifer.org: Browse through an online catalog that includes heifers, goats and water buffalos. Buy one, and this global nonprofit will give it to an impoverished family in the name of someone on your gift list.
If you want brick and mortar locations, try these:
Product Red. When you purchase items from a retailer featuring goods with the Product Red label, 50 percent of the proceeds goes to the Global Fund to help fight AIDS and other infectious diseases in Africa.
Another great choice is Oop, which donates 1 percent of its annual profits to one of four great charities. A fixture on Thayer Street for nearly two decades, Oop has since moved to Dedham, Mass. But the store continues to feature as many as 40 Rhode Island artisans, still has some of the best stocking stuffers, and ships to the Ocean State free of charge, says co-owner David Riordan.
