Festival Fete presents Pam Laurenzo of BlackSheepDesigns, native Rhode Islander, skilled Librarian and most importantly, a talented vintage jewelry designer. Pam relocated to Connecticut, just outside the Rhode Island border ("still within shouting distance") but works as a librarian at Central High School in Providence.
Pam has been married to her husband Jay for almost 10 years (he enjoys metalsmithing and makes many of the findings (ear wires, headpins) she use in her designs). Together they have three children, age ranges 2-9.
Pam's pieces feature an amalgam of vintage materials – Lucite and glass beads, brass findings, buttons, tokens and coins. She is especially drawn to the “distressed” look, particularly patinated metals, rust, and oxidized finishes. She hand-applies patina solutions to her altered findings and seals the finish for long-lasting wear. However, the majority of her headpins and ear wires are crafted by her husband, an aspiring metalsmith.
Pam claims to be a treasure-hunter at heart…for her, sourcing the materials for her designs is half the fun! Her mother was a collector and they spent many hours together at yard sales, consignment shops, and antique stores…searching for unique and whimsical finds. Pam now spends many happy hours at New England warehouses and antique shops/shows, searching for unusual components for her designs.
Pam is a self-proclaimed unrepentant foodie and is equally happy dining at 5-star restaurants and chowing a hamburger at Haven Brothers. She loves inline skating and plans to join the roller derby someday.
Her musical tastes are all over the map...from 70s fromage to punk rock and she is a member of the "fantabulous" arts collaborative Arts in RI.
You can learn more about Pamela Laurenzo and her unique jewelry line by visiting her ETSY SHOP!
You can ALSO find Pam's work at our OOP location in Dedham, Massachusetts!
Pam's TIPS for Aspiring Artists
"Listen to that little muse inside your head. She'll tell you what to do. Everyone has a talent!"

Festival Fete presents Lisa Kretchman, a mixed-media artist residing in Douglas, Massachusetts where she lives in happy chaos with her husband, two cats and two Australian Shepherds. Lisa started out as a traditional illustrator using soft pastels and scratchboard. While attending Massachusetts College of Art and Design, she studied illustration and was introduced to digital painting software.
Blending those skills, she worked for over 15 years as a multimedia artist and animator.
Over time she missed the feeling of creating art by hand, and eventually returned to her traditional artistic roots to create more meaningful and personal artwork. Much of her current work is inspired by traditional subject matter - landscapes, seascapes and botanicals. Taking reference photos on her travels, she paints the diverse environment of her native New England.
Finding these explorations of the natural world joyful and peaceful, Lisa tries to communicate those feelings through her artwork.
Her pieces are bold and colorful, and she often uses vibrant pastels to add impact and emotion to her art.
Because of her illustration background, Lisa also enjoys creating narrative works that incorporate symbolism. She is currently working on a series of illustrative paintings for Olivia’s Heart Fund, a Rhode Island charity which supports research for children with congenital heart defects (CHD). Each painting represents a child with CHD, and as she works on each one, Lisa records the story and artistic process on her blog.
Lisa’s work has been shown at several local art stores and galleries, including the Attleboro Arts Museum’s 2010 Flower Show, where she received a merit award.
You can view Lisa's beautiful paintings online by visiting her Art Portfolio AND her Art Blog, where she details the inspiration and process of her work.
Lisa's TIPS for Aspiring Artists
"I feel that we are all meant to be creative in some way. I sometimes hear people say that they “could never paint like that” because they feel that they are not naturally artistic. But part of being an artist is accepting that your work won’t be perfect, and you will never stop learning and working towards being better. Give yourself permission to get there over time. The process of being creative is just as important as the end result. Make something – anything - artistic, and know that it is for YOU, not for the rest of the world to judge. By making art you heal your soul."
SUPPORT Lisa and your other local artists by attending the Garden City Center Art Festival on June 11, 2011 and by "liking" our Festival Fete Facebook Page!
Have a great day!

Festival Fete presents Johanna Parker of Kaya's Kloset as the featured Garden City Center Art Festival artist of the day. Four years ago Johanna Parker had a baby girl and named her Kaya. Kaya was a sweet, sleepy, mild-mannered infant who was a champ at rubbing and wiggling and kicking off her socks! As a winter baby, this just wouldn't do, so Johanna got to work fixing the problem resulting in a pair of soft soled baby shoes, that actually stayed on!
A few pairs for Kaya and her little friends turned into an Etsy shop, a few craft fairs, and a fledgling business!
As Kaya and her friends have grown, so has the size range of Kaya's Kloset soft soled baby shoes and slippers and they are now available from newborn sizes through a man's size 13 shoe, because really... everyone needs a good pair of slippers.
Johanna is trained as a biochemist, but has put it all aside to enjoy a crafty life instead. Since the career change she is a much happier person!
Kaya's Kloset is also raising money for SOAR right now with the sale of a special airplane shoe! $9 from each pair goes to SOAR, an organization that makes a real difference in helping women (and men) who are the victims of rape. Please visit their website to learn more at http://www.firstgiving.com/operationfreefall
Johanna's TIPS for Aspiring Artists
"I don't think that artists choose their work, it chooses them. I don't know of artists who went out to have a business or sell to the masses... they all ended up there by doing what they loved and having others recognize it. Don't force the art, let the right medium find you."
You can learn more about Kaya's Kloset by visiting Johanna's website at www.kayaskloset.com.
Become a FAN of Kaya's Kloset on Facebook and FOLLOW Kaya's Kloset on Twitter!
Johanna's slippers can be worn & enjoyed by EVERYONE!

Festival Fete presents Jill Lamere, trained graphic designer, illustrator, printmaker and painter. Throughout the years Jill has taken numerous courses and workshops at a variety of renowned colleges including the Rhode Island School of Design, Ithaca College and Metropolitan State College of Denver. However, Jill's success began with her 3-dimensional children's books, stationery & oil paintings.
The core of Lamere’s paintings focuses on the natural world and its seasonal views. Her landscape paintings convey a sense of wonder and typically do not contain any man-made imagery. Oftentimes, Jill uses multiple media such as collage to enhance her vision of the landscape’s texture and immediacy.
