Festival Fete presents Sema Kaya-Gurerk of Floweredsky Jewelry, a jewelry designer and entrepreneur from the beautiful city of Istanbul, Turkey. She considers her culture a unique resource from which she draws most of her work. Sema deeply enjoys sharing her creativity with children and adults alike, and has even given several jewelry-making workshops in the Rhode Island area.
Growing up in one of the most cosmopolitan and culturally authentic cities has enhanced Sema's inspirational skills in creating with distinct and different methods. Sometimes, a beautiful stone will be the catalyst for a piece of jewelry. Or sometimes the catalyst is simply the theme of her customer...
Sema moved to the state of Rhode Island after earning her B.S. in Chemical Engineering in Istanbul. Here she received her master’s degree in International Trade and later attended Rhode Island School of Design for silversmith classes.
After Sema's daughter started daycare, she noticed that she had been spending a lot of money on plastic bags for her lunches and snacks. Doing that and seeing other people do the same made her realize that she would be able to make a difference in creating a healthy environment just by using reusable eco friendly bags. With that, she formed her new eco friendly line! Some of her new, eco-friendly materials can be found online at http://www.etsy.com/shop/housejewels and well as in THIS ARTICLE of the Providence Journal Decor Section.
Sema uses only the finest materials in her jewelry, including sterling silver and gold filled findings, semi-precious and precious stones and beads, particularly evil eye beads.
"I believe jewelry, like clothing, is an intimate expression of individuality, which should enhance the beauty, and spirit of the wearer."
Sema's TIPS for Aspiring Artists
"Believe in yourself , try new things to update yourself and your products…Never give up… Everyday is a new beginning."
