Festival Fete presents Johanna Parker of Kaya's Kloset as the featured Garden City Center Art Festival artist of the day. Four years ago Johanna Parker had a baby girl and named her Kaya. Kaya was a sweet, sleepy, mild-mannered infant who was a champ at rubbing and wiggling and kicking off her socks! As a winter baby, this just wouldn't do, so Johanna got to work fixing the problem resulting in a pair of soft soled baby shoes, that actually stayed on!
A few pairs for Kaya and her little friends turned into an Etsy shop, a few craft fairs, and a fledgling business!
As Kaya and her friends have grown, so has the size range of Kaya's Kloset soft soled baby shoes and slippers and they are now available from newborn sizes through a man's size 13 shoe, because really... everyone needs a good pair of slippers.
Johanna is trained as a biochemist, but has put it all aside to enjoy a crafty life instead. Since the career change she is a much happier person!
Kaya's Kloset is also raising money for SOAR right now with the sale of a special airplane shoe! $9 from each pair goes to SOAR, an organization that makes a real difference in helping women (and men) who are the victims of rape. Johanna's TIPS for Aspiring Artists
"I don't think that artists choose their work, it chooses them. I don't know of artists who went out to have a business or sell to the masses... they all ended up there by doing what they loved and having others recognize it. Don't force the art, let the right medium find you."
